Background of the Study
Music and art therapy are emerging as innovative interventions for improving mental health, particularly among adolescents. In Edo State, where creative expression is deeply rooted in cultural traditions, these therapies offer a promising, non-invasive way to address mental health issues such as depression, anxiety, and stress. Art and music therapy provide adolescents with a medium to express emotions, process trauma, and build self-esteem in a supportive environment (Okeke, 2023; Afolabi, 2024). These creative therapies have been shown to foster emotional regulation, enhance interpersonal skills, and promote resilience by encouraging self-expression and social connection. In a context where traditional mental health services may be stigmatized or inaccessible, music and art therapy can serve as an alternative avenue for mental health support. Despite the growing interest in these modalities, there is limited empirical research on their effectiveness in improving adolescent mental health in Edo State. This study aims to investigate the role of music and art therapy in enhancing mental well-being among adolescents, exploring how these interventions can be integrated into school and community settings to support positive psychological outcomes.
Statement of the Problem
In Edo State, adolescents face increasing mental health challenges, including depression, anxiety, and stress, yet traditional mental health services remain underutilized due to stigma and resource limitations. Although music and art therapy have shown promise in other contexts, their application and effectiveness in Edo State have not been sufficiently studied. Many schools and community centers lack structured programs that incorporate creative therapies, leaving a gap in accessible mental health support for young people. As a result, adolescents may not receive the holistic care needed to address their emotional and psychological needs, leading to poorer mental health outcomes. The absence of rigorous evaluation of these alternative therapies makes it difficult for policymakers and practitioners to understand their potential benefits and limitations. Addressing this gap is essential for developing comprehensive mental health programs that integrate creative therapies and offer culturally relevant support to adolescents.
Objectives of the Study
1. To evaluate the effectiveness of music and art therapy in improving mental health among adolescents in Edo State.
2. To identify the specific mental health benefits associated with these therapies.
3. To propose strategies for integrating creative therapies into existing mental health support programs.
Research Questions
1. What is the impact of music and art therapy on adolescent mental health in Edo State?
2. Which mental health outcomes are most improved by these therapies?
3. How can schools and communities best integrate music and art therapy into mental health initiatives?
Research Hypotheses
1. Participation in music and art therapy is significantly associated with reduced symptoms of depression and anxiety among adolescents.
2. Creative therapies enhance emotional expression and resilience in adolescents.
3. Integrative programs that combine music and art therapy with conventional mental health services will lead to better overall outcomes.
Scope and Limitations of the Study
This study focuses on secondary school and community-based programs in selected areas of Edo State. Data will be collected through pre- and post-intervention assessments, interviews, and focus group discussions. Limitations include the variability of therapy implementation and potential subjective bias in self-reported outcomes.
